The Café Construction Manager supports the DPW Café Construction Crew “Oculus” through construction (including extensive rigging), maintaining, disassembly and storage of the Center Camp Café structure  in a timely manner. Working in close collaboration with the Café Operations team, this role oversees construction, maintenance, disassembly and storage of the Center Camp Café structure.  They will manage staffing, purchasing,  advance planning, and any design changes required by Café Operations, or as outlined by the DPW Construction and Utilities Superintendent.

  • Coordinate with Café business operations team to determine any special needs based on problems identified the prior year or new requirements.
  • Manage the construction schedule and needs for Café construction and Secondary Construction based upon submitted blueprints approved by the Planning and Design Manager.
  • Compare needed materials list with current inventory before submitting materials requests to DPW Purchasing.  Work with DPW Purchasing to facilitate ordering of specialty items such as rigging materials/tools.
  • Act as a resource to Café Operations, Art/Decor/Lighting (A/D/L) and Performance/Sound teams and/or Café installation artist(s) to provide structure dimensions, solve problems, answer questions about what can be suspended from the structure, etc.
  • Coordinate construction scheduling and planning with Café Ops, A/D/L and Performance/Sound crews to ensure that all teams are able to work efficiently and safely, and that all pre-opening installation requirements are able to be met.  Café backstage (Coffee Shop) area must be ready for equipment installation no later than 8 a.m. Saturday before event start (earlier is preferred).  Other “ready” dates for key milestones like trenching, lighting installation, carpet installation, building placement, etc. to be determined with all interested parties.
  • Work with DPW Volunteer/Labor Coordinator to assemble a crew for Café construction and disassembly.  Manage the crew to maximize efficiency and safety.
  • Coordinate/collaborate resources with Arctica Construction crew including electricity, heavy machinery rigging, tools, etc.  
  • Check Café structures during the event at least daily to identify and fix any necessary repairs.  In the event of wind storms or other special weather events, assemble a standby crew to address safety issues as needed real-time.  Maintain communications with Café operations teams to identify and resolve any problems as needed.
  • Attend managers’ meetings, create reports, and maintain related correspondence i.e., Email lists as deemed necessary.  Reports shall include a final report detailing what worked and what needs work due season end.
  • Perform various other duties as assigned by Black Rock City LLC.


  • Knowledge of general construction practices and/or structural engineering.
  • Familiarity with common rigging practices.
  • Familiarity with Burning Man and with event-based production work.
  • Ability to lead by example, motivate teams, and have excellent interpersonal skills.
  • Ability and willingness to work with a primarily volunteer labor force.
  • Must be willing to travel and relocate for the duration of the DPW work season.
  • Experience leading construction or site crews at Burning Man or other festival environments.
  • Must have working knowledge of Google products (Gmail, Docs, Sheets, Drive) and Microsoft Word and Excel.
  • Experienced in the use of Computer Aided Design software (preferred)
  • State issued Contractors License (preferred)


  • Valid Class C Driver’s License and clean driving record
  • OSHA 30 hour Construction & General Industry Certification


Off-playa:  Work is primarily sedentary in nature, no special demands are required.

On-playa:  This position requires periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing.  This position will be physically demanding, and requires individuals with good physical health, and endurance.  Work will include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation.  Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.


This is a temporary, full-time position ineligible for benefits, working out of Gerlach, Nevada.
