DPW Power Sector Lead

The DPW Power Sector Lead will be responsible for the layout, construction, maintenance, and strike of municipal power grids within Black Rock City. They will coordinate the flow of information and physical resources within their grid sites, and work closely with DPW staff and vendor technicians to get the job done. Effectively using and tracking available materials, the DPW Power Sector Lead will be expected to interface and effectively communicate with power users about their power grids to ensure that they receive the best possible service. This position will work closely with vendors and will communicate with them, as needed, under the supervision of and as directed by, the DPW Power Technical & Vendor Relations Manager.

  • Effectively work with the Power management team to design and install temporary electrical grids
  • Build site maps and create other documentation as needed, under the guidance of the DPW Power Operations Manager
  • Assess and provide feedback on team logistics, while maintaining clear communication with and gaining input from, DPW crewmates and vendor technicians
  • Mentor and instruct volunteer crewmates
  • Handle heavy materials and drive work trucks
  • Coordinate with heavy equipment crews for logistical support
  • Interface with user groups, emphasizing a willingness to be flexible to their needs
  • Perform connections, tie-ins and other critical elements of grid construction
  • Troubleshoot and load-balance power grids across Black Rock City
  • Assist in construction of other electricians’ grids and maintain awareness of their general configuration
  • Clearly and accurately, flag and label power grids for safety and for accessibility, easing the process of any potential troubleshooting during the event
  • Keep regular, accurate and up-to-date logs of work progress and material usage
  • Create and maintain as-built plans for assigned grids and update daily
  • Perform at least 48 hours of on-call shifts during the event, and commit to staying accessible and on-comm throughout the event
  • During strike, ensure that all materials are successfully retrieved, sorted and packaged properly for their return to their distributor
  • Throughout the build and strike timeframe, assume accountability for and ensure that DPW work trucks, storage containers, and equipment yards are kept clean and safely arranged
  • At the end of the season, write and be prepared to submit to department managers, completed documentation that summarizes, critiques, and provides a detailed assessment of, departmental successes, areas in need of improvement and important feedback     



  • Able to efficiently troubleshoot electrical faults and load balance three-phase power grids
  • A competent writer, capable of effectively sharing ideas through simple drafting, word processing and spreadsheets
  • A strong understanding of and ability to adhere to safe working practices
  • Willingness and ability to work long hours daily in a harsh desert environment
  • Able to comfortably and safely deadlift up to 70 lbs
  • Experience managing volunteers with a willingness to promote their strengths and respect their limitations
  • Able to coordinate with outside teams and adapt plans of action on the fly as necessary
  • Effectively able to coordinate labor and material movement across multiple, and sometimes widespread, sites
  • Capable of leading by example, with a willingness to motivate teams, and delegate tasks effectively
  • Experience working in remote wilderness and/or desert environments
  • Possession of a professional work ethic and excellent interpersonal skills
  • Experience with Commercial or Residential electrical (1 to 3 years)
  • It is helpful if the candidate has previously been to Burning Man and/or is familiar with its culture
  • A sound understanding of electrical principles as they relate to temporary power distribution equipment in outdoor environments
  • Working knowledge of common electrical connectors and cable types used in the entertainment industry
  • Ability to adjust schedule seasonally to work at the Burning Man event held in Nevada  


Must have a valid state issued Driver’s License and a clean driving record

OSHA 10 Certification, or completion of  OSHA 10 training with DPW



This position is extremely physical in nature and requires prolonged periods of heavy lifting, bending, kneeling, squatting, and climbing. This position will be physically demanding, and requires individuals with good physical health, and endurance. Work will include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation. Much of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.


This is a temporary, full-time position ineligible for benefits, working out of Gerlach, Nevada.
