JOB SUMMARY

The People Lifecycle Manager (PLM) will utilize extensive HR industry and systems experience to design and develop culturally aligned practices to support our regular, seasonal and contingent staff. In this full-time regular position, you will report to the Director, People Operations, and work closely with the People Operations team, managing multiple stakeholders, leaders, and vendors.

DUTIES & ESSENTIAL JOB FUNCTIONS

  • Partner with department leadership on workforce planning and budgeting, assessment and deployment.
  • Oversee the recruiting and hiring process and function for the organization from job design through on-boarding.
    • Partner with hiring managers to develop honed, purposeful, evaluable job descriptions.
    • Develop and maintain job families across the organization.
    • Evaluate job families and job descriptions on a regular basis.
    • Be a champion of onboarding.  Work with managers to ensure their employees get the richest experience in their first 30 days joining Burning Man and get the tools they need to be successful.
    • Collect feedback on the onboarding process to continue to evolve the program as needed.
    • Develop strategies and plans for year-round, contingent and seasonal hiring.
  • Scope an HRIS strategy including requirements definition, design, deployment, and ongoing refinement.
  • Develop change management strategies and tactics that support adaptation of new management practices, processes and technology touching all levels of the organization.
  • Provide counsel and support around employee transitions
    • Promotion management, communication.
    • Job change management, communication.
    • Termination management, communication.
  • Manage large complex projects including requirements gathering, work breakdown structures and deliverables.
  • Manage the demand around seasonal employees and develop strategies, processes, and tools to deal with the influx and outflow of our seasonal workers for the Burning Man event.
  • Institute processes, tools, practices around tracking hours for seasonal workers during the Burning Man event.
  • Provide staff relations and performance management guidance to managers through coaching, counseling, career development, and internal feedback systems.

LEARNING AND TEACHING

  • Documentation - Drives the creation, publishing, and maintenance of process documentation related to assigned duties.
  • Teaching – Takes a leadership role in the acculturation and training of staff and volunteers. Teaches live or e-learning classes, as requested. Promotes a culture of teaching and learning throughout the community.
  • Mentoring - Mentors subordinates in acquiring the knowledge, skills, and experience that will allow them to advance in the organization. Aids, encourages, and inspires their team.
  • Training development - Collaborates with the education team to develop training materials in their area of expertise, as requested.
  • Learning – Pursues ongoing learning in their area of expertise, working to stay current on emergent knowledge, skills, and processes. Participates in conferences, forums, and networking events, where appropriate.
  • Speaking – Represents Burning Man as a subject matter expert and culture-bearer, as requested.

QUALIFICATIONS

  • Bachelor’s degree from an accredited institution required in Industrial/Organizational Psychology, Labor Studies & Employee Relations, HR, or Business Administration/Management
  • 6-8 years of hands-on, progressive HR Generalist and/or HR Manager experience
  • Current knowledge of California, Nevada and Federal employment laws and compliance
  • Specialized knowledge of and experience with HR systems technologies
  • Demonstrated experience with the most up to date employee lifecycle practices
  • Extensive experience working with seasonal employees and volunteers
  • Experience working with nonprofit organizations
  • Experience with the Burning Man event or regional burns, preferably as staff/volunteer
  • Strong business acumen, broad knowledge of other HR and people practices impacting organizational results
  • Ability to adjust schedule seasonally to work at the Burning Man event held in Nevada

REQUIRED LICENSES/CERTIFICATIONS

  • Valid driver’s license and clean driving record

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS/WORK ENVIRONMENT

  • Off-playa:  Work is primarily sedentary in nature, no special demands are required.
  • On-playa:  Work is primarily sedentary but will also include the need to find and meet with department representatives who may not be in the vicinity therefore this could include walking or using some form of transportation.  Some of the work will be in outside weather conditions and will be exposed to fumes or airborne particles as well as possible extremes in temperature.
